I had just settled in to bed around 11:30pm the other night, shut off the TV, the Macs, the Crackberry, and the lights, and was diligently trying to get to sleep (the night before was long to say the least) and noticed what appeared to be light flashing through my bedroom window. This would be normal for a lot of people, but I live on the fifteenth floor of a high-rise and it doesn’t ever happen.
I had just settled in to bed around 11:30pm the other night, shut off the TV, the Macs, the Crackberry, and the lights, and was diligently trying to get to sleep (the night before was long to say the least) and noticed what appeared to be light flashing through my bedroom window. This would be normal for a lot of people, but I live on the fifteenth floor of a high-rise and it doesn’t ever happen.
My first thought was “please don’t tell me that the fire alarms are about to start going off and I’m going to have to collect my umpteen hard drives and waltz down fifteen flights of stairs in my pink fuzzy bunny slippers.” Luck would have it that my building was just fine, but the Skyway Station (Jacksonville, Florida’s tribute to the monorail) across the street was ablaze.
I grabbed my camera, slapped on a 400mm lens, sent the ISO through the roof, and headed out to my balcony to snap a few shots. I have to tell you, those firemen are not only brave, but damn fast, too. The blaze, which at one point was shooting a solid 4 to 5 stories high, was out within a half hour.
The next morning I grabbed the memory card and headed to work. As I sucked down my “Starshmucks” I decided to hit up a local news website to see what information they had on the fire. There wasn’t much intel, and there weren’t any photos, so I sent them a link to a web gallery I threw together on the fly. That was a mistake. For the remainder of the day I was inundated with emails from just about every news source in the city requesting permission to use my photos, this wasn’t exactly conducive to getting my work done, and eventually I quit responding to the emails.
Finally, a couple of days later I got a worthwhile request, no it wasn’t from the AP or Getty, it was from the Fire Department. They had seen the pictures and wanted them for their wall, which I thought was pretty darn cool, and how often does someone like me get to give something back to selfless public servants like firemen.
